Growing Up Around Blacks: The
Role of Black Spaces in Identity Construction
Among the
Black Middle Class
Wednesday, February 11, 4 - 6 p.m.
The MARIAL Center
Emory West, 4th Floor, Room 415E
What do middle-class blacks
think about the desirability of nurturing racial identities?
Many members of the black middle class routinely travel back
and forth from the black world to the white world, yet we know
very little about how this group conceptualizes its integration
into American society.
Drawing on data collected through in-depth
interviews and ethnographic observation, Emory University sociologist
Karyn Lacy will establish
a link between an affinity for black spaces and the assimilation
trajectories of middle-class blacks. The implications for the
salience of black racial identities will be discussed.
Lacy is
core faculty member of the MARIAL Center. Her MARIAL research
focuses on the social organization Jack & Jill,
and its role in the families of middle-class blacks.
