Activities

The camp meeting is a week-long religious retreat and all activities are framed in terms of this religious function. For its first century, Salem campground was an exclusively Methodist institution, but it is now considered interdenominational, thought its Methodist roots are still very clear. Visiting preachers now include both Baptist and Presbyterian pastors, and every evening features a visiting speaker and choral group from a different church.

Each day children attend Bible classes and other youth activities. During the day there are sports activities both organized and informal for the kids, and a lot of time for adults to sit on the porches of their tents and pass the time together.

Prayer services each evening are held in the great wooden "tabernacle," an open-air church center which was built in 1854 and is currently on the National Historic Register.
